Few things to add to your bucket list

  • Visit Borobudur

Borobudur is one of the greatest cultural icons of South East Asia. Declared as a Unesco heritage, the ancient buddhist monument is absolutely incredible. You can either do the tour by yourself, or have the audio version that explains to you the history of the monument.

  • Watch the Sunrise at Mount Batur

Mount Batur is an active volcano, about 1.5 hour form Ubud. Once again you can organise a tour that picks you up and drop you off at your hostel. The hike is only about 700 meters elevation so it doesn’t go on for too long but keep in mind that some bits are also relatively steep. Again, the hike usually starts quite early so you can see the sun rise from behind the volcanos, and no earlier wake up has ever been so worth it. Since you end up at altitude, the mornings are very chilly so I would definitely recommend bringing a warm coat. They do have little stands at the top where they rent coats and sell hot chocolate tho. I also like to bring some money for the tour guide, as they heavily rely on tips as their income.

  • See blue fire at Mount Ijen

Mount Ijen is quite a remote place and if you are with a bunch of people, you can all easily organise your own tour. To make this a stress free experience, I chose to organize mine with a tour guide. They are pretty easy to book from anywhere, from the street booth or online. The group tour allows you to meet like minded people and they organize everything from your pick up to your tour guide and all that stuff you don’t want to do. They pick you up quite early in the morning (around 4am) so you have time to do the hike and get down the volcano while it's still dark so you can actually see the blue fire. They provide the oxygen mask so you can breath at the bottom of the volcano and the way down is actually quite steep. The tour is usually not approved by the government because it’s too dangerous to be approved for a tourist attraction. So go at your own risk!

  • Try Surfing

Surfing is a big part of the everyday life of everyone in Indonesia. There are plenty of surf school everywhere and the lessons are for all levels, from beginner to expert. You can pick up lessons either by yourself or with a group. This will allow you to gain confidence to get started and they will also teach you how to read the waves, where to position yourself, what to do in a white out and what not. If you have no idea where to start if you want to surf, this is definitely something to look into. You woulnd’t want to miss out on some of the best waves in the world.

  • Visit Lombok

At a ferry distance, Lombok is one of the many island in Indonesia. Very different lifestyle than Bali, is it a lot less touristy and a very different perspective of Indonesia than Bali will provide you with. Lombok is much smaller, so getting from one place to the other is easier, and the traffic is muchhhhh better than in Bali. You will find a lot more local life, food and quieter waves.

  • Banyumala Waterfalls

Fair distance from Canggu, but definitely worth the drive. The way to get to the waterfall is mainly steep stairs with a bamboo ramps, you have to be careful but it’s definitely worth the descent. When I went, it wasn’t too crowded and it was very easy to get to the bottom, to swim in the water and to take some photos. There is also a little restaurant at the top where you can get coffee and food.
